| About: |
General: Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision - The Network is The ComputerTM - has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc. to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software, and services that make the Net work. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the World Wide Web.
Vision: Everyone and everything connected to the network. Sun's vision is that eventually every man, woman, and child on the planet will be connected to the network. So will virtually everything with a digital or electrical heartbeat - from mobile phones to automobiles, thermostats to razor blades with RFID tags on them. The resulting network traffic will require highly scalable, reliable systems, from Sun.
Mission: Solve complex network computing problems for governments, enterprises, and service providers.
At Sun, we're tackling complexity through system design. Through virtualization and automation. Through open standards and platform-independent Java technologies. In fact, we're taking a holistic approach to network computing in which new systems, software, and services are all released on a regular, quarterly basis. All of it integrated and pretested to create what we call the Network Computer.
Products: Every hardware and software product we make is part of an integrated, tested, and fine-tuned system – the Network Computer. Sun's unique approach is designed to make it easier for customers to assess, deploy and manage the many network-computing capabilities we introduce each quarter. Simply put, they can focus on the value of the system rather than getting bogged down with myriad components. Sun offers customer and partners flexibility with an array of systems that foster Sun's 64-bit leadership, starting from the workstations all the way to enterprise-class servers powered by Sun's SPARC, AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon processors. Sun's systems offer customers leading operating systems choice of running their applications on the screaming fast Solaris operating system for all systems, or Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux or Windows with Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) certifications on systems based on industry-standard, AMD Opteron processors that are 32-/64-bit binary compatible.
In our view, it should be no more difficult to launch a new network service than it is to run a shrink-wrapped program on a standalone PC. We simply have to make sure that the Network Computer delivers customer value, by delivering all the standard infrastructure components – directory, network file service, application server, messaging, identity management, and so on. To that end, we offer a complete service-delivery platform, a ready-to-deploy software system based on open standards: The Java? Enterprise System.
Services: Sun's next-generation services help customers build optimized network computing solutions that translate into real business value. Utilizing Sun's foundation of relentless innovation and deep expertise, our services allow customers to reduce risk, cost, and complexity while retaining choice and control of their IT assets.
We also offer a variety of pretested solutions, developed over 20 years of working with customers. These easy-to-customize and easy-to-deploy solutions represent a new approach: Instead of building every solution from scratch, we start with tested architectures and production-proven methodologies, then tailor the solution to specific customer requirements. Sun's solutions require fewer consultants and can provide customers with distinct cost advantages and time savings.
Together with our iForceSM partners, we team with customers to add real value where network computing and business converge. |
