Teams of two developers must solve a real-life case and deliver a working program within 12 hours. Only the best and most experienced teams with a strong development toolset succeed. A jury of independent specialists decides on the winner.

The JavaPolis RAD Race is the shortened, "Java only" version of the (full blown) Original RAD Race.
It is a 'real' JAVA competition, meaning that:

  • A realistic and detailed business case is to be realized
  • By teams of 2 developers in 12 hours (from 9 a.m. til 9 p.m.)
  • In verifiable conditions of time and place and without any (external) help
  • There are no limitations on the software and hardware that can be used

Practical aspects :

Contest date: December 13th @ JavaPolis 2005

Timeframe: From 9 a.m. till 9 p.m.

Prices:

  • iPOD Nano's for the winning team (courtesy of JavaLobby)
  • Winning teams are invited to present their application during the keynote of December 15th (if you wish )
  • Winning teams (and used tools) will receive additional exposure through online press!

Jury: gets together on December 14th where each team can present his/her solution.

How to enter the competition? Send an email to info@bejug.org?subject=JavaPolis 2005 RAD Race.
Please note that only the first 15 teams will be able to enter the competition!

Show your fellow JavaPolians what you are worth and register now, there are only Winners !!

If you want a preview of what to expect, or want to measure up with non-Java teams in the RAD Race Full Edition, head over to the original RAD Race edition 2005/6 on November 18th-19th!

  • When does the JavaPolis RAD Race start?
You can setup your hardware from 7:30 a.m. and an introduction to the RAD Race (including distribution of the assignment) starts on 8 a.m. The race officially starts on tuesday December 13th from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m. in the JavaPolis venue / BOF rooms.
  • What if I've a problem?
All teams are permament monitored and (eventually) problems detection and -solving will be given to all teams.
  • When do we demonstrate our result?
Each team will receive 30 minutes to demonstrate their result to the JavaPolis RAD Race jury the next day on Wednesday December 14th. A schedule will be setup during the race for each team.
  • Do we have WIFI / Internet access ?
    No
  • What are the evaluation criteria ?
JavaPolis RAD Race teams develop a real-life administrative application. They are judged on their working program. No endless lists of questions, just a working program!
  • What can we bring with us ?
Have at least 2 development machines with YOUR well-known set of development tools, complete and in "working order" together with other material like:
    • a small hub/switch and network cables
    • a development server (if needed)
    • cables, a small printer
    • spare material (recommended)
    • all other "must haves" (jolt cola, candy, banners, supporters, etc...)
  • Do we receive a data model?
Yes! You will have to pull in a given datamodel and dataset (delivered in a CSV file) into your database so that you can (re)work wherever necessary.
  • In what format will the result be requested ?
You can demonstrate your solution on your own portable / desktop to the jury.
  • Feeeeed meee !!
The RAD Race teams will receive free lunch and unlimited (soft) drinks.
  • What are the prizes?
Each member of the winning RAD Race team receives a nano iPod (courtesy of JavaLobby) and additional exposure during the JavaPolis keynote on Thursday morning. During this keynote more technical information on the winning application can be given to the other JavaPolians.
