Looking Forward To JavaPolis aka Devoxx and speaking about: EJB 3.1 - From Legacy To Secret Weapon
I'm already looking forward to the Devoxx conference. I will give a talk about pragmatic EJB 3 hacking, with the title: "EJB 3.1 From Legacy Technology To Secret Weapon". The first half is based on the JavaWorld's article with the same title, during the second part I would like to share with you some best practices, patterns and ideas from my projects. I plan to hack some stuff interactively as well. Unfortunately, I will spend only one day on this conference - just too many EJB 3 / Java EE proj
Devoxx
Orakel @ Devoxx ‘08
Javapolis / Devoxx ‘08 - Metropolis - Antwerpen “An oracle is a person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic opinion; an infallible authority, usually spiritual in nature. It may also be a revealed prediction or precognition of the future, from deities, that is spoken through another object or life-form (e.g.: augury and auspice). In the ancient world many sites gained a reputation for the dispensing of oracular wisdom: they too became known as “oracles”, and the
Devoxx 2008: my session picks for University day 1
I’ll be again present on Europe’s largest Java conference Javapolis Devoxx. Here is a list of what sessions I’ll be following. If you want to meet me let me know via my Twitter. Scrum in Practice The agile Scrum process will be explained: its roles, its artefacts and the challenges in implementing it in an organization. Servlet 3.0 & JSF 2.0 I’m especially interested in the new features in JSF2.0 and the modularization support for web applications in Servlets 3.0 JFreeChart Having us

Javapolis 2007 – RoundUp
Closures And The Ars Rhetorica
How about those annotations? Haven’t they made the once simple and elegant Java language into a unintelligible mixed-up mess of code and metadata? These are just two outcries of despair about annotations that I found on the Internet, both written by able and experienced Java developers: “We have been seeing this for awhile via XDoclet, and the .NET community is definitely seeing it. I dunno, maybe it is just me, but it scares me. We need to get out some practices for what should be in annotat
Slides from “OpenJDK: The First Year” @ JavaPolis 2007
I’ve posted the slides from the talk I presented at JavaPolis 2007 last week, OpenJDK: The First Year . The video version will eventually be available online at parleys.com . [ Update: The video version is here .] My thanks to Stephan Janssen and the entire team for putting on another great show, which this year sold out at 3,200 attendees. It was well worth the trip!
Javapolis Day 3
Evolving agile Scott Ambler Scott Ambler is definitely one of my favorite speakers. Sharp, blunt and always making interesting observations. His talk was about the evolution of "agilism" the last couple of years. Agile methodologies have now crossed the chasm and have been widely adopted. Still "agilists" have a lot of work left to do: spend more time designing, modeling and documenting the right things and less time obsession about cool and cutting edge techniques. Also to be truly
JavaPolis 2007 - Day 5
Already a bit worn out the last day @ JavaPolis 2007 began. Since the exhibition area was already closed down yesterday evening the crowd got together in even less space for breakfast, but that was ok.First talk today was given by David Anderson about a kanban approach to software development. It is indeed a quite interesting approach but does not seem to work for all projects. Nevertheless you should check out his website and look for more informations about this.Following this was a presentati
Javapolis Day 2
The Flex day Bruce Eckel showed some pretty impressive stuff you can achieve with Flex (fail-over, load-balancing) and especially by how you can improve user-interaction by developing Flex-based GUIs. I think a lot of Java developers forget that the applications must look great as well as work great. We think too much about patterns and scalability but hey, what do users say about our application? Not much, since it's all in the manual .... We have to learn to reflect the domain model in t
JavaPolis 2007 - Day 4
So on with day 4 of the JavaPolis. First thing is that you are starting to feel worn out. But this is ok - there is a price to pay for all this fun we are having. So even being maybe a bit tired we managed to get up early enough to get to the Metropolis in time for a good breakfast (seems I am starting to repeat myself, but it is quite astonishing even on day 4) and got into the keynote session - no need using the overflow room. Before the keynotes started the traditional JavaPolis Family Photo
JavaPolis: More About ME
Thursday’s JavaPolis keynote starts with Bruce Eckel doing basically a partner slot — a 45 minute promotion speech for Flex (what else). What’s this doing at a Java conference? How much did Adobe pay for….. — Oh. Okay. I just saw the first demo. I want to use this! Show me more! And it works in everything with a Flash player on it? Where can I sign up? Stephan Janssen’s keynote on his side project, parleys.com , (no seriously, there’s some great stuff on there and the new (Flex) version looks
Javapolis Day 1
The state of the java universe James Gosling Interesting overview of the state of things in Java. Everything looks great according to James Sun also showed some demos of JavaFX. JavaFX is an environment whose goal is to simplify and speed the creation and deployment of high-impact content for a wide range of devices, so you can use JavaFX script to develop a GUI that will work accross different devices: different types of mobile phones, desktops, TV boxes, etc. Sounds great. Groovy Upd

JavaPolis 2007 - Day 3
That was an interesting morning today. Everything went as planned and we arrived so early we had a lot of time left for a nice breakfast, filling out a survey at the SUN booth (getting a NetBeans 6 t-shirt that way) and answering some questions for the tomorrows edition of the Parleys magazin. Besides other very interesting things there are two things that grabbed our attentation - a NetBeans installationand the friendly staff at the SUN booth providing free NetBeans 6 T-ShirtsAfterwards we go
JavaPolis 2007 - Day 2
Day two was the day of RIA - if you believed the session titles. But before the sessions started we did a quick walk around the exhibition area. This contained a short stop at the Sun booth for collecting the appropriate t-shirt "May the Source be with you". A more thorough investigation is on the todo list for the next days.We started with the Swinging RIA presentation (after having had breakfast), which included a nice demonstration of the power of the Beans Binding Framework and the Swing Appl
JavaPolis 2007 - Day 1
An interesting Day 1 of JavaPolis is nearing its end. So to get it all in sequence - first things first - breakfast. After having walked to the Metropolis from our flat this was a real good start into the dayAfter having had a real good breakfast (as you can imagine) we got to the conference rooms and I have to admit that the location is astonishing for such a conference. See for yourselfFirst session I attended today was The Zen of Agile Management. This was quite an experience finding about a
Agile Development and Scalability at JavaPolis
I'm heading out again to Antwerp to the JavaPolis conference . I hear the show is sold-out, so that's good news. I'm going to give two presentations. One on Monday evening is a BoF on Agile Development of Distributed Systems, and the second one is during the conference on Wednesday. In the first session, titled Agile Development of Distributed Systems , I'm going to cover the challenges and the complexities involved in developing scale-out distributed system, and the agile techniques we've i
Upcoming gig: JavaPolis 2007

I’ll present a talk entitled OpenJDK: The First Year , and also co-host an OpenJDK BOF with my fellow Governance Board member Dalibor Topić . JavaPolis is a lively conference in a great venue, so do stop by if you can. (If you need more motivation, check out the trailer !)

Hi, you can download the JavaPolis 2005 high-res (1.5 Mb) here, let me know if you want the original 4Mb picture.
Next time we should do a landscape picture so the other 400 JavaPolians on the both sides are also visible

Hi

Did the photographer take pictures on the Quickie sessions? I am looking for a photograph of me doing "What's New in Struts 1.2.8 and 1.3 Dev?"
